RACISM BASED ON SKIN..

CAN BEAUTY INDUSTRY DEAL WITH COLORISM?

Do I look good? Am I too fair? Am I too dusky? Am I too dark?

Yes, this is the exact inception of lacking self-confidence. Tell me something at one point you say we should not be judgmental towards any individual regarding the looks or their nature. Then why are you judging yourself and having self-doubt?

People will come and blabber a lot, especially to women for their skin tone.

Do you even know what decides the skin color? It is not the woman who is responsible on whom you are passing the comment but Melanin which decides the skin tone.

What is Melanin?

“Melanin is their smile,

Melanin is their power,

Melanin is their identity,

Melanin is their strength,

Melanin is their beauty.”

Call it colorism or shadeism; it is all in the head. It is us, the human race has created this class system based on skin color for humans only.

People who are dusky want to become fair where as people who are dusky want to become fair. So, one thing is crystal clear that grass is greener on the other side.

Actual discrimination is being faced by women with darker skin tones. Because of this, they feel inferior. Asians and Africans; who face the colorism; are specially targeted in western countries. Right from personal matters like relationships and marriage alliance to professional matters like job placements and pay, dusky skinned people have been suffering the most. Also, the beauty brands, representing by lighter skin tones have prioritized more Anglo-looking women for their products.

But then came a time in late 1960s when cosmetic industry got revolutionized by the introduction of products which helped the people; especially women to break the glass ceiling and skin related complexities. The right products help in boosting confidence.

Cosmetic products like color correctors, concealers, foundation bases, translucent powders, blush on etc. help people alter their skin tone artificially on temporary as well as permanent basis. They have actually helped in removing colorism and bringing equality.

One such example is of “Glow and Lovely” earlier known as “Fair and Lovely”, owned by Hindustan Unilever Limited is a popular skincare brand in India as well as other countries. The company renamed its product to restrict the color-based discrimination which is being seen within India where we have “Equality” term mentioned in the Preamble of The Constitution.

Campaigns like “Dark is Beautiful”, “India’s Got Color”; beauty brands like L’Oreal, Hindustan Unilever, Kay Beauty; modelling agencies like IMG, Elite model Management, GladRags career academy and a lot more other aspects that built up the fashion and cosmetic industry have been working to remove colorism across the world. Countries like Kenya and Tanzania have banned skin bleaching products.

I’m hoping that “Better days are coming”…because

IT IS ALL ABOUT LOVING YOUR SKIN AND EVERY SHADE OF IT NOW.

IT IS ALL ABOUT K.S.

 WHO IS KALPANA SAVLA?

Dear readers,

Someone has rightly said “Beneath that perfect makeup and the smile, she is the perfect girl, who’s ready to conquer the world.” Its all about looking presentable and nice.

First of all, what is makeup?

Make up is an art of camouflaging the flaws and enhance the best features of a person. And let me make it clear, make up is just not only about eye shadow. A complete make up look consists of eye shadow, blush on, contour, glitter, shimmer, foundation, lenses..the list is too long for me to mention.

In the current time, why to become a makeup artist? The answer comprises of three legit reasons i.e.

1. Playing with colors is an art and makeup artists are meant for doing that.

2. Its always about one’s passion towards makeup.

3. Most important; makeup being a service sector profession; there are easy returns.

The point is, everyone wants to look good. No one misses a chance to let makeup artists work on him/her by sprinkling colors, shimmer and glitters on oneself.

And she, Kalpana Savla, being a makeup artist loves to help people getting beautified. She is the living example of a person who felt lost in the beauty store to religiously following every new makeup technique.

Born in Kuwait, she came to India when she was a little girl with eyes full with curiosity and a big question mark on her face. But thankful to her family, migration was easy for her. She started her journey in this industry in 2007. According to her, where she stands today is all because of her life changing mentors, irrespective they being connected with her personally as well as professionally.

Kalpana made  her humble beginning with no strong finance. But even after that, there was no looking back.  Almighty was, Almighty is and she believes Almighty will always be with her no matter wherever or in whichever condition.

As she grew up, she came to Mumbai and this city started becoming dearer and dearer to her. She felt in love with the city as well as its people. One such example is of her better half Karan who is also known as Hasmukh and of course her best friends Rajesh, Shweta and Vaishali. They changed everything in her. Years went by and their became unbreakable. They are her lifelines especially Rajesh.

Kalpana knows Rajesh since last 25 years and now they are inseparable. He always stood by her during the toughest times and honestly she owe him a big time.

To her, Love for makeup increased with each passing day. With God’s grace and her ambitious nature, she opened her own make-up academy in a short span of time in 2008 in Thane, Mumbai. Since then, there’s not even a single day that her Academy is failing or becoming a burden on me.

Time flied just like bees go from one flower to another and she was blessed with the most important person of her life-Virraya, her cutayy daughter. She’s been her sunshine since the day she was born in 2010. Virraya, the uncrowned princess has never questioned her mother's upbringing in spite of knowing the fact that she's a working lady who cannot give much time to her.

Today almost after 15 years in this business, she has come across many highs and lows. Today, she can move around the city in the with her head high all because of her unending struggle which ultimately resulted in the sweetest taste of success.

She is thankful to everyone right from the day she was born.

Once she said, "Trust me Kalpana Savla wouldn’t have been Kalpana savla without all of you."
